The direct answer: choose two or three observable commercial outcomes—such as accepted lead, created opportunity, and confirmed revenue—and send them back to ad platforms only after defining source, identity, time, value, consent, deduplication, and correction. Rules determine whether an event is valid. AI can structure notes, classify reasons, and estimate propensity in a separate field; it must never turn a prediction into an observed sale.
When a platform receives only a page view, form fill, or contact, its system optimizes toward people who complete those actions cheaply. That can increase spam, students, vendors, unsupported territories, duplicates, or poor-fit accounts. Sales discovers the issue weeks later, but the platform never receives the answer. Marketing buys volume, CRM records quality, and each system learns a different reality.
Write the Revenue Signal Contract
- Event — accepted_lead, opportunity_created, proposal, purchase, revenue, renewal, or loss; keep the vocabulary small and operational.
- Source and authority — the object and system that confirm the fact, its owner, and rule version.
- Identity — click ID, lead ID, contact, account, order, or opportunity, including ambiguous links.
- Time — when the outcome occurred, when it was sent, correction window, and expected delay.
- Value — observed versus estimated, currency, margin when available, and partial outcomes.
- Consent and purpose — which data may be sent to which platform, market, and objective.
- Deduplication — stable event or order ID, safe retry, and browser/server duplicate prevention.
- Correction — cancellation, return, reopened deal, changed amount, and replay.
- Use — observation, reporting, audience, or optimization; not every event becomes a primary goal.
- Evidence — minimum payload, version, API response, diagnostics, reconciliation, and subsequent decision.
The Contract separates a real event from an internal label. MQL may mean an activity score in one business and human acceptance in another. Closed-won can precede billing; invoiced revenue can be refunded; one deal can involve several contacts and campaigns. State precisely what occurred and what remains a hypothesis before optimization begins.
Use rules for truth and AI for ambiguity
- Rules — eligibility, stage, authority, consent, value, currency, time, deduplication, corrections, and blocks.
- Integration — capture identifiers at first contact, preserve lineage, observe CRM changes, and retry idempotently.
- AI — extract loss reasons, summarize seller notes, classify poor fit, normalize categories, and prioritize exceptions.
- Predictive model — estimate probability or value only in fields and events separate from observed outcomes.
- Person — validate samples, set policy, resolve material conflicts, and authorize promotion of a signal into bidding.
Google documents enhanced conversions for leads with first-party data, identifiers, conversion time, name, value, and currency. It also recommends transaction IDs for duplicate control and consent fields. HubSpot documents lifecycle-stage event sync, but only after an event is created and for contacts associated with an ad interaction. Plumbing cannot repair an unreliable definition of qualified lead.
An eight-week implementation pilot
- Week 1 — choose one business line, two platforms, one quality outcome, and one revenue outcome.
- Week 2 — sample 200–500 leads; reconcile CRM, media, and sales; find duplicates, delays, and missing stages.
- Week 3 — write the Contract and map consent, retention, owners, and abstention criteria.
- Week 4 — capture IDs, build the event queue, and send to sandbox or shadow mode.
- Week 5 — validate schema, match, latency, value, deduplication, retries, corrections, and API responses.
- Week 6 — publish events as secondary/observe-only goals and reconcile daily counts with CRM.
- Week 7 — promote one stable signal into optimization for a controlled campaign with budget cap and rollback.
- Week 8 — compare quality, pipeline, incremental cost, and operations; scale, repair, or retain measurement-only use.
Start without replacing CRM, agency, or martech. A stage trigger, event table, connector, and reconciliation routine may be enough. Cost rises with platforms, countries, CRMs, volume, latency, identities, currencies, corrections, consent policy, observability, and support. Custom work adds control; native connectors accelerate delivery but may constrain semantics and portability.
Do not call match rate a business result
- Data quality — identifier coverage, ownerless events, duplicates, missing values, and stage disagreement.
- Delivery — API acceptance, errors, retries, delay, deduplication, and sent-versus-received reconciliation.
- Funnel — accepted lead, opportunity, win, revenue, and margin by source and time to outcome.
- Media — cost per accepted lead, opportunity, and revenue plus the distribution of quality.
- Business — incremental pipeline and revenue, cycle length, close rate, and sales capacity.
- Operations — review hours, exceptions, maintenance, incidents, and cost per trusted event.
A better match rate, more imported conversions, or lower attributed cost does not establish incrementality. Use an experiment, geo holdout, or staged rollout when feasible. Preserve a comparable campaign or region and log concurrent changes in creative, offer, targeting, and sales operations. Platforms assign credit; the business still needs to estimate causality.
Assign ownership before activating bidding
Marketing owns the decision and intended use of a signal; sales and RevOps own stage and reason; finance confirms revenue and margin; data measures; technology operates identity, queue, and APIs; privacy and counsel validate purpose and markets; the agency configures campaigns and controls. No one should promote an event into bidding because the integration dashboard is green. The CMO approves which outcome a platform may pursue and which volume-quality-cycle tradeoff is acceptable.

The sources document conversion import, event streaming, and CRM integration capabilities. They do not demonstrate that sending more events improves performance, replace data policy, or make AI mandatory.
